Welcome to the Faculty of Science

A message from the Dean

Have you ever wondered why or how about something? It is that sense of curiosity that often drives one to be a Scientist.  Through observing the world and recording what is found, Scientists put curiosity into action.

Fundamental research, whether driven by curiosity, interest or intuition, attempts to advance knowledge that might then be used to solve practical problems. The combination of fundamental and applied research impacts our lives daily. Our health and well-being, our ability to fight disease, and our quality of life have benefited from advances in the life sciences.  The physical sciences help us to better understand the world we live in and how we are having an impacted on it.  The mathematical and computation sciences help us to deal with the complexities of our daily lives and bring us closer to one another no matter where we might be physical located.

The faculty of Science, its faculty, staff and its students, is committed to community and we want everyone involved. Our science cafes, public lectures and high school visits help us share with others what we have discovered. Carleton events like the Magic Show, the Butterfly Exhibit and our specialized lecture series and showcases help us to share our excitement over recent advances in science with the broader community. We also want hear from you, your thoughts, questions, and concerns.

The world has many mysteries. If you are interested in learning how to be a detective and solve some of them, Carleton’s Faculty of Science is inviting you to join in the fun. We can help you acquire the skills needed to make the next round of discoveries that keep us moving forward and to better understand the world we live in.
